10 commandments of a Budget Traveler

A year long travel taught us the rules of budget travel.

10 commandments of a budget traveller

  1. Thou shall not stay in a place with air conditioners, mini bar or a hotel with any star
  2. Thou shall bargain for everything including petrol and medicines and of course water
  3. Thou shall not buy tickets from the hotel concierge (point to be noted: if your hotel has a concierge and it is called that, then you are not following the first commandment)
  4. Thou shall find the best deal on everything even if it means that deal finding left you no time to do the thing you wanted to do
  5. Thou shall eat at a ridiculously cheap place and get a diarrhea
  6. Thou shall never take taxis from anywhere to anywhere
  7. Β Thou shall walk it even if it means that thou shall be in bed for two days after the walking
  8. Thou shall look for the cheapest laundrette in town only after number 9
  9. Thou shall look for a bucket to do your own laundry
  10. Β <<Are you a budget traveler? Help us figure out the tenth>>

  5. Hahaha, this is brilliant and we agree in 100% πŸ™‚ As for the 10th commandment, for us it would have to be: Thou shall always try to hitchhike everywhere (or maybe this should be the first one πŸ˜‰ or as KG Sriram mentioned, something about carrying a light bag.

  6. Hitch Hikers,

Being Indians, and the kind of stories we have seen in Bollywood movies related to Hitch Hiking, we are yet to try it.

May when we are in Europe, we will give it a try, In India our skeptical side shines.

  10. I agree with all of them. My fav is the7th one. When it comes to eating, my rule is to eat in a crowded place, where the most locals are eating. That has worked for me so long!

  11. Well worded. 10th commandment for me is definitely – “stay away from shopping”

  12. “Thou shall look for a bucket to do your own laundry” πŸ˜€ – this made me burst out laughingg πŸ˜€

  13. Always learn how to say ” Too Expensive” word in local language at it will work like password in any bargaining…
